Summit Q&A

This is the inaugural ICC Music Education Summit! The ICC has offered an ICC Summer Teacher Symposium every year since 2016. This year, the Symposium is growing and evolving into a new event that is the flagship event of our most recent initiative, The ICC Institute! The ICC Institute will serve teachers, directors, and other professionals all year long, and the Summit is the larger yearly gathering of those served by The Institute for a week of personalized and impactful professional development.

See below for some FAQs about the Summit:

If you’re looking for a conducting workshop that’s different from the traditional university model, the Summit offers one built around clarity, curiosity, and community. We focus on strong fundamentals, practical rehearsal skills, and technique that actually serves the sound—without pressure, hierarchy, or the need to impress. It’s a safe, supportive space where questions are welcome, mistakes are part of the process, and conductors at all stages are met exactly where they are. You’ll get thoughtful, honest instruction, real time on the podium, and tools you can take straight back to your ensemble—less about flash, more about growth, and always grounded in making music together.

The Summit is designed to be a transformational, confidence-building, impactful event for each and every participant regardless of their background, experience, or current employment. The staff at ICC get to know each participant, adapt the events of the week as the Summit progresses, and ensures that everyone feels seen in their own reality. Topics are designed ahead of time, but adapted as necessary. Extra sessions can be added or deleted according to need. It is a very personalized event as the Summit groups bond and express their interests and needs.

The core components of the ICC training experience will remain – such as vocal pedagogy, tone production, and basic conducting. In addition, each day of the Summit will be focused on a different set of core values with a specifi c guiding topic. Keynote sessions will address this topic each day with opportunities for breakout sessions amongst cohorts of similar teaching experiences. The
Summit has been expanded to include more time and sessions to allow for deeper experiences and more connection with colleagues (as requested in the past)! There will also be more opportunity for conducting opportunities and even time in front of a choir! All things are, of course, according to each participant’s comfort level.
