DIRECTING BOONE COUNTY PREPARATORY CHOIR AND BEGINNING LEVEL CHOIR

Andrew M. Himelick has been an elementary music educator in Carmel, Indiana, for 33 years and has served as an Assistant Director with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir for 27 years where he directs Preparatory and Beginning Level choirs. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Butler University in 1993. He completed the Kodály Certificate of Music Education at Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, in 1999; Orff-Schulwerk Levels I and II at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2001 and 2002; and Level III at Anderson University in 2005.

Himelick has been recognized for his contributions to music education with the Indiana University School of Education Martha Lea and Bill Armstrong Teacher Educator Award in 2006, the Indiana Music Education Association’s Outstanding Elementary Music Educator Award in 2021, and the Teacher of the Year Award at Towne Meadow Elementary School in 2022.

A charter member of the Feierabend Association for Music Education (FAME), Himelick is a FAME Endorsed Teacher Trainer in both First Steps in Music and Conversational Solfege and currently serves as President-Elect of the organization. He has presented workshops and served as a clinician at national and state music education conventions and festivals. He is also an author and contributor with GIA Publications, where his work includes Sing in Parts and Leading Large Group Singing.

Through his teaching, conducting, writing, and professional development work, Himelick is passionate about helping children and teachers to become confident, expressive, and joyful musicians.
